Understanding fertility problems

Unfortunately infertility is common and this is a stressful time for you and your partner. There are many causes of infertility and a variety of treatment options are available. Fertility treatment is aimed at identifying what factor or factors are contributing to the fertility problem so that action can be taken to correct these factors or treatments can be used to overcome the fertility problem. I will always aim to correct your fertility problem in the simplest and most efficient way possible.

Aiding in male infertility

As well as managing female infertility problems I am also able to provide a complete fertility service for couples where there is also a male factor problem. For men with azoospermia (absence of sperm in semen analysis) I am able to perform a surgical sperm collection. This is a very effective treatment for men who have had a vasectomy but also azoospermic men needing further investigation and possible sperm collection.

Your questions answered

When should I see a fertility specialist?

After 12 months of trying without a pregnancy it is advised to see a fertility specialist.

In some situations it is advisable to see a fertility specialist sooner:

  • Over 35 years old
  • PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)
  • Irregular periods
  • Problem with semen analysis

What can I do to improve my changes of falling pregnant?

While trying to fall pregnant it is important to:

  • Stop taking contraception
  • Maintain a healthy balanced diet and do regular exercise
  • Take folate to reduce the risk of neural tube defects
  • Have an antenatal screen to ensure your vaccinations are up to date and if not can be topped up before falling pregnant
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stop smoking, drinking alcohol or taking recreational drugs

Understand the fertile time of your cycle and have regular intercourse during this time to increase your chances of falling pregnant. This fertile window is two weeks before your period starts or the middle few days of a four week cycle.

What can I expect at a fertility consultation?

It is preferable to see both the male and female at a consultation so a full medical history can be taken from both of you. This will help establish the possible causes for your infertility which will direct the best treatment for you which is the most timely and least invasive. Appropriate investigations will be explained and organised. It may be also necessary to do a physical examination to guide investigations and fertility treatment.
